Raftery Returns Poetry Competition.

As part of  The Raftery Returns Arts Festival in KIltimagh , County Mayo. (26th September to 3rd October, 2021.)  The Raftery Returns Poetry Competition opens for submissions on Tuesday 25th May and closes at midnight on Friday 20th August 2021. A shortlist of ten poems will be announced on the Raftery Returns Arts Festival Facebook page and the winners of the first, second and third prizes will be invited to attend and read at an evening event during the festival. The overall winner will be announced at this event.
Prizes
  • First Prize: EUR 500. The winning poem will also be unveiled as the first poem of the Kiltimagh Poetry Trail on Anthony Raftery’s birthday, 30th March 2022.
  • Second Prize: EUR 200
  • Third Prize: EUR 100
Submission Information:
  • The competition is open to original, unpublished and unbroadcast poems on any subject.
  • The poems should not be more than 20 lines.
  • Cost of entry: One poem EUR 7 and each subsequent poem EUR 5.
  • One judge: poet and short story writer Ger Reidy. His decisions are final.
  • Once entered, no changes can be made to the submission.
  • Due to the large volume of entries, it will not be possible to notify the authors of non-winning poems or to give individual feedback.

  1. Each poem in a separate Word document. (PDF format cannot be accepted). Times New Roman 12 and single spacing. Please use the title of the poem as the title of each document. Do not write your name or other personal details anywhere on this document, as the competition is judged anonymously.
  2. A cover letter as a separate Word document attached to the same email, NOT in the main body of the email. This should include your name, email address, phone number, postal address and poem title(s).

Judge: Ger Reidy
Poet and short story writer, Ger Reidy, is an author of international acclaim. Published by Dedalus Press and Arlen House in Ireland, he is the recipient of several prestigious prizes as well as Arts Council and Mayo County Council bursaries. He’s published three poetry collections – his most recent, Before Rain, was shortlisted for The Piggot Prize. His short story collection, Jobs for a Wet Day, was nominated for the Edge Hill Prize. His work has been translated into Turkish and Russian.
